Types of Standing Seam Metal Roofing Panels

There are 3 types of standing seam metal roofing panels and all of them are a concealed fastener system. This means that the fasteners on each metal panel are not visible or exposed to the weather. Concealed fastener panels are more weather-tight and expensive when compared to exposed fastener panels.

1.Mechanically Seamed - The panel edges are connected together with a roof seamer.

Mechanically seamed roofing is a standing seam metal panel that has edges that line up with each other. A roof seamer is used to bend the roof panel edges and interlock the sheets together. This is referred to as a single lock or a double lock system.

  • Double Lock has two folds and has 180 degree seams. It’s used more often and is a more weather-tight connection.
  • Single Lock has one fold and has 90 degree seams. It’s rarely used and requires a greater roof slope.

2.Snap Lock Panels With Concealed Fasteners And Clips - The clips attach to the panel and fasten directly onto the roof deck.

Standing seam is the gold standard of a metal roofing panel. It's weather-tight, durable, long lasting, and requires minimal maintenance. When you buy a standing seam metal roof it's considered a "lifetime" roof.

Western Lock® standing seam panels with a "Cool" paint system will lower your energy cost without sacrificing style. The clips and screws on the standing seam panel are concealed to prevent roof leaks and the panels have a modern and streamlined appearance.

3.Nail Strip or Nail Flange - A standing seam panel that does not use clips.

A nail strip roofing panel is a snap lock standing seam roof that does not have clips. The male flange has one inch slots that are spaced 6 inches apart and fastened directly to the roof deck.

It's the most economical and easiest to install of all the standing seam systems. However, you sacrifice a lot of performance when you eliminate the clips on this metal panel. It's still an expensive panel when compared to an exposed fastener panel for a corrugated metal roof.
